October Half Term at FeelViana: Sunshine, Surf & Space to Breathe in Northern Portugal

When the UK slips into grey skies and jumpers, something magical happens on Portugal’s northern coast. October brings warm golden light, uncrowded beaches, and that perfect in between temperature that makes you want to stay outdoors all day.

At our Feel Viana Beach Club, October half term isn’t the end of summer – it’s one of the best weeks of the year.

Here’s why:

1. Sunshine Without the Scorch

October in Viana do Castelo typically brings:

  • Daytime temperatures around 20–24°C
  • Warm Atlantic water (often warmer than early summer!)
  • Blue skies with fewer crowds

It’s warm enough for beach days, surfing and poolside lounging — but cool enough for hiking, biking and exploring without the intense summer heat – the perfect balance for families.

2. Space to Truly Switch Off

October means fewer tourists and a completely different pace.

Cabedelo Beach becomes wide, open and wonderfully peaceful. There’s space for:

  • Morning shoreline walks
  • Sunset drinks at the beach club
  • Kids learning to surf without busy line-ups
  • Long, lazy lunches with sea views

It’s that rare holiday feeling where you don’t need to queue, rush or plan around crowds.

3. The Ultimate Active Family Escape

FeelViana isn’t just a hotel — it’s a sport and nature playground.

Your fully inclusive active pack gives you access to a whole range of activities, including:

  • Guided Bike Ride x 1 (gravel bike or mtb) – 4hrs
  • Surf Lesson x 1 group session (including equipment) – 1.5hrs
  • Surf Board Hire x 1 session – 2hrs
  • SUP Tour x 1 session (stand up paddle guided including equipment) – 1.5hrs
  • Yoga/Pilates x 1 session (or a skateboard/pump track session) – 50mins
  • Spa on request Sauna/Turkish bath/pool (treatments are extra)
  • Fully Equipped Gym included and available on request
  • Kids Club included and available on request
  • Great runs along beach, boardwalks and through pine forests

The area around Porto (just an hour south) and northern Portugal is known for its dramatic landscapes and outdoor lifestyle – and October is prime time to enjoy it.

4. Cosy Evenings, Portuguese Style

October evenings bring that perfect cosy atmosphere:

  • Fresh seafood dinners
  • Local vinho verde
  • Golden sunsets over the Atlantic
  • Warm, relaxed restaurant terraces with burning log fires when the air gets a little chillier.

The historic centre of Viana do Castelo is full of character – cobbled streets, traditional architecture, and family friendly restaurants where you’ll feel like locals rather than tourists.

5. Easy Travel, Big Reward

Northern Portugal is just a short flight from the UK, serviced by many airports and with flights as little as just £80 return to Porto. Once you’ve landed either pick up a hire car or hop in a taxi for a short 45 minute drive to the beach club.

6. That “Endless Summer” Feeling

There’s something special about late-season sun. The light is softer. The ocean feels wilder. The pace slows down.

At our FeelViana beach club, you’ll find:

  • Barefoot afternoons
  • Kids sandy and smiling
  • Parents actually unwinding
  • A mix of adventure and calm that’s hard to find elsewhere

October half term doesn’t have to mean layering up and bracing for winter. It can mean Atlantic swims, sunset drinks, forest bike rides and long beach days.
