International Crew is the IYT certificate that says you are a useful, active crew member on a yacht: someone who can be trusted with lines, fenders, winches and a helm under supervision. It is open from age 14, which makes it the qualification of choice for teenagers on a family sailing week.
What does International Crew involve?
Six days of sailing with us in Kefalonia, doing the real work of running a yacht. Register as an IYT student before you travel (registration is free), then the certificate fee of 35 euros is paid locally in Greece at the end of the week. Availability is limited to UK residents and nationals plus a set of other approved countries, so check with us when you book.
Why it works so well for teenagers
Give a 15 year old a rope and a reason. All week they are crew, not passengers: hoisting at the start of a passage, sweating lines in a cross breeze, taking the helm on the long reaches between islands. The certificate at the end makes it official, and it is a real rung on the IYT ladder toward Flotilla Skipper and the ICC at 16.
Which week to book
Any of our Kefalonia sailing weeks carries it. A learn to sail week suits crews starting from zero; the flotilla gives more miles and more harbours to practise in. Tell us at booking that someone on board wants to certify and the instructors build it into the week.
