Things to Do in Kefalonia: An Active Holiday Guide

Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island: dramatic west-coast beaches, clear water for every watersport, and a national park in the hills. Here is what to do, where to base yourself, and when to go.

Things to Do in Kefalonia: An Active Holiday Guide

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, off the west coast of Greece, and one of the most varied. Parts of it are national park, home to wild horses and golden eagles; the coastline runs from the famous white sweep of Myrtos to the quiet, red-sand beaches of the Lixouri (Paliki) peninsula, where our beach club and villas are based. The water is clear and sheltered, which makes it ideal for watersports, sailing and swimming.

What are the best things to do in Kefalonia?

Kefalonia rewards an active holiday: swim and watersport from its beaches, sail the sheltered Ionian, cycle the quiet Paliki lanes, hike in the Mount Ainos national park, and watch the loggerhead sea turtles in Argostoli harbour. Most of it is within easy reach of the Lixouri peninsula on the island's west side.

Where should you stay in Kefalonia?

We are based on the Lixouri peninsula on the west of the island, away from the busier resorts. Our Lixouri Bay Beach Club is a small beachfront hotel with free watersports and bikes, and our Villa Club offers self-catering villas with a pool nearby. Both put the peninsula's quiet beaches and the island's activities on your doorstep. See the Kefalonia destination page for the full picture.

When is the best time to visit Kefalonia?

The season runs May to October, with warm seas from June onwards and quieter beaches in the shoulder months. Our best time to visit guide breaks it down month by month, including when to catch the turtles and the steadiest watersport winds.
