RYA Dinghy Instructor Course: Four Weeks in Kefalonia

What the four-week RYA Dinghy Instructor course involves: prerequisites, how the weeks break down, what is included, and what the qualification lets you do.

RYA Dinghy Instructor Course: Four Weeks in Kefalonia

The RYA Dinghy Instructor ticket is the qualification that lets you teach sailing anywhere the RYA scheme runs, which is most of the world. Our course packs the whole journey into four residential weeks at Lixouri Bay Beach Club in Kefalonia.

What do I need before the course?

The RYA Adult Level 1 Sailing certificate, or the ability to sail to that standard. In practice that means you can rig a dinghy, sail a triangle in moderate conditions and recover from a capsize without drama. If you are close but not there yet, tell us when you enquire and we will be honest about whether four weeks is enough.

How do the four weeks work?

The early weeks tighten your own sailing: boat handling, capsize drills, sailing theory and the personal skills assessment the RYA requires. Then the focus flips from sailing to teaching. You learn to structure sessions, brief from a whiteboard, run a safety boat and coach beginners afloat, with practice on real guests at the club under supervision. The final days bring the moderation, where an external RYA coach assessor signs you off.

What is included?

Airport transfers, shared accommodation at the beach club, full board meals, all boats and safety kit, and RYA training six days a week. Your day off is in Kefalonia, which is no hardship. Contact the team for current dates and fees.

What can I do with the qualification?

Teach at RYA training centres worldwide, run beach club lesson programmes, or come back and do a season with us. Qualified dinghy instructors who enjoy teaching often add the windsurf instructor ticket to double their usefulness to any centre.

Common questions

It is a full-on four weeks. Your own sailing has to reach the RYA personal skills standard before the teaching weeks, and the final moderation is run by an external RYA coach assessor. Arriving able to sail confidently at Level 1 standard or better makes it very achievable.

A current first aid certificate is a standard RYA requirement for instructors. Ask the team when you book and they will point you at what to sort before you fly.
