Sea turtles are a protected species, and a few simple habits let you enjoy them without causing harm. Whether you are snorkelling in a bay or watching from the Argostoli quayside, the rules are the same: keep your distance and let the turtle stay in control.
Can you swim with sea turtles in Kefalonia?
You may share the water with a turtle while swimming or snorkelling, but you should never seek to touch, ride or corner one. If a turtle approaches, stay calm and still and let it pass. In Argostoli harbour, watch from the quayside rather than entering this protected feeding area.
The dos and don'ts
- Do keep several metres of distance and watch quietly.
- Do take all litter home, especially plastic bags, which turtles mistake for jellyfish.
- Don't touch, feed, chase or flash photography at a turtle.
- Don't disturb marked nests, dig on nesting beaches, or drive on the sand.
- Don't use beach furniture or bright lights on nesting beaches at night, which can disorient hatchlings.
Who protects Greece's turtles?
Kefalonia and the wider Ionian are protected by Wildlife Sense and the Katelios Group, and nationally by the ARCHELON Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. They monitor nests, run beach patrols and rehabilitate injured turtles, often with volunteers. Supporting or simply respecting their work is the best thing a visitor can do.
